戰國時,燕國名將樂毅大舉伐齊,一下子攻陷了七十多個城池,最后卻敗在牛角之下:齊將田單搜集了千多只牛,「束兵刃于其角」,然后火燒牛尾,縱牛沖擊燕軍,把燕軍殺個落花流水。
要打敗蠻牛,首先要應付的自然是牠的雙角。西班牙斗牛士有時看著朝他胸腹插來的牛角避無可避,就會用手抓著保住性命。英國人叫這一招做take the bull by the horns(抓著公牛雙角)。抓住了牛角,就可以設法打敗蠻牛了。
由十九世紀末開始,英國人常常用take the bull by the horns這句話來比喻「不畏懼、不退縮,毅然著手處理困難或危險事情」,例如:
Harassed by a high rate of inflation, the Chinese government announced that it would take the bull by the horns and adopt stringent measures to cool down the economy. (在高通脹困擾之下,中國政府宣布會正視問題,采取嚴厲措施冷卻經濟。)
